1. What is a CSA?
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, or Andelsjordbruk in Sweden, and is method of directly supporting farmers and food producers by subscribing to a 'share' of the seasons harvest. This commitment on behalf of the consumer allows the farmer to better plan their seasons crops, reduces waste, and allows the farmer to spend more time growing food during the busy growing season because the produces is pre-sold to the customer. CSA is a popular sales model in many countries and is an excellent way to support small-scale agriculture and build community!
2. What happens to my share if I go on vacation?
There are two different options for members who are on vacation during the growing season.
Option 1: Arrange with a friend or neighbour to collect your share while you are away.
Option 2: We allow up to two weeks of share holds per season in exchange for credit towards next season's membership.
3. Will I be able to eat all of the veggies that I get in my weekly share?
The weekly vegetable share is designed to be a well-balanced variety of commonly used kitchen veggies with a few more exotic items mixed in. The shares include a mix of leafy greens, roots, and aromatic items such as onions, garlic, herbs, etc..
A weekly newsletter with a farm update, recipes and any important info will be included in each week's share.
Planning a weekly soup night before the next week's share is delivered can be a great way to use up any extra veggies.
4. Can I buy a half share?
At this time, we only offer full vegetable shares. However, we understand that every family is unique and not everyone can eat that many veggies per week. In this case, we suggest finding a friend, relative, or colleague to share with. This is a great way to build community and connect with others. If you would like help being paired with someone to share with, let us know!
5. What if I don't like one of the items in my share?
Everyone has preferences there may be certain vegetables that you don't love. Getting a weekly vegetable share is a great way to learn about new veggies, expand your tastebuds, and try out new recipes. The shares are designed to provide the most diversity possible from week to week. However, if you really dislike something, we offer a trade box at each pickup location, here you may leave something you don't like and trade for something that you do.
6. Is a vegetable share more expensive than buying vegetables from the supermarket?
This is a complicated question due to a variety of factors but the short answer is, No.
Buying locally produced vegetables through our vegetable membership is equal to or even less expensive when you consider the following factors:
- The veggies in your weekly bag are always grown using organic principles and are extremely fresh, ensuring that they are full of nutrients and healthy and safe to eat
- We grow a great variety of veggies and cultivars that are not available in the supermarkets in Sweden. This means not only are the veggies in the bag are higher quality and taste better, but they are also exclusive and unique.
- Small-scale vegetable production uses much fewer inputs and requires significantly less fossil fuel use, which means no hidden environmental costs and a much smaller footprint
- Buying a weekly veggie significantly reduces the need for plastic packaging
